SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol that is used to connect to a web server and perform different tasks through a command line. The protocol is used by many knowledgeable users, as the information transmitted over it is encrypted, so it cannot be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access could be used for lots of things with regards to the type of website hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for instance, SSH is one of the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file if the website hosting server permits it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH may be used for practically anything - you may install software or restart certain services like the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is employed mostly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients which permit you to use the protocol if your PC is using a different Operating System as well. The connection is established on TCP port 22 by default and the remote hosting server always listens for incoming connections on that port although lots of service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Shared Website Hosting

If the shared website hosting package that you’ve picked through the signup process features SSH access by default, you will be able to activate this feature with a click in your Hepsia CP. If you've selected a different package, the SSH access function could be added using the Upgrades menu and it will become available instantly. All the details that you need to connect will be conveniently listed in the SSH section of the CP - the hostname, the username and the port number. You may also set what password to use from the same spot and you'll be able to modify it at any time. All the commands that are permitted are listed inside the Help articles which we have prepared for you, in addition to examples of the syntax that you have to use. An additional advantage of allowing SSH access to your account is that you'll be able to upload files via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is included by default with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you are able to add it via the hosting CP if required - even just for the current month. Either way, you can activate and de-activate the feature with one mouse click from the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same place, you will find the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You will also find a box where you could type in the password that you'd like to use, since it does not need to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you may also change it as much as you require. A full list of the commands that can be executed within a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and a few instances. An extra function after SSH access is activated will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports this kind of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Hosting

The virtual private server plans which we offer provide SSH access as standard, not as an optional upgrade or a feature which you need to enable. Once your new server is ready, you will be able to connect and start working on your content through the login details that you have entered through the order process. A copy of the SSH credentials will be sent to you via e-mail as well. Since your VPS shall be isolated from the other ones on the physical hosting server, there are no limitations as to what you can or can't do through SSH. You'll be able to download, set up and manage any piece of software that will run on a Linux hosting server, reboot the entire server or just a specific software component, and work with files, folders and databases without restrictions. All you will need for that is a console or an SSH client on your end.
